Another Major Award

Rob always has this way of outdoing me.  I won a purse last week, Rob was presented with a prestigious community award early this morning.  I am still very happy with my purse, thank you very much, and he can’t carry his award around with him wherever he goes.

Our family arrived at the Century Center in downtown South Bend at 7:15am, dressed nicely, hair brushed, pleasant smiles and all.  Anyone with kids knows that is enough to receive honorary recognition.

The award he was given is called the “Drum Major Award”, named for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech by that title.  Mayor Jeff Rea and Mayor Steve Luecke from South Bend give this award each year to those who exemplify the Spirit of Dr. King through achieving social justice and community service.

I am so proud of Rob.  He accepted the award humbly, knowing that there is no way we could have accomplished so much without the thousands of hours his staff, and countless volunteers have given to “bring up there down here” in our community.

This picture of Maddie reading about Martin Luther King Jr. touched me so deeply.  This is what our family is all about.  Singing “We Shall Overcome” at the end was one of the proudest moments of my life.

Here’s me hoping, begging, praying, that the girls (esp. littlest) will be good.  They did great, bribery works.

Rob’s acceptance speech was amazing.  You can read the whole thing here.

“.. Jesus gave us a new norm of greatness. If you want to be important—wonderful. If you want to be recognized—wonderful. If you want to be great—wonderful. But recognize that he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. That’s a new definition of greatness… by giving that definition of greatness, it means that everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don’t have to know Einstein’s theory of relativity to serve. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love. And you can be that servant.”

Of course, we love you guys, and we know how amazing your family is, and we know the big things our curch is doing under Rob and Mark’s direction – it is so great that this award shows that wow-ness to the entire community! We’re NOT just a fluffy “Hollywood” church (whatever that means)…we DO care about the entire community, and ARE reaching out to those with the greatest needs.
…and for a Mayor to see that (and know it) – and to want to honor Rob for it – WOW!
I asked Rob for his autograph, he declined my request.

    Hi there
I found you through Inspired Bliss and have enjoyed reading your posts. What a great quote from Martin Luther. This upside down kingdom is a whole new way of thinking. ‘Everything is rearranged.’
I just started blogging about Jesus in my everyday (similar to you) at http://burningbushes.org/
    Here’s to inspiring one another!
