As Far As The East Is From The West

IMG_3198 You know how you tell your kids the same thing over and over and over, just hoping that someday they will get it…the puzzle pieces will all connect, the light bulb will go on, etc?

That happened with Isabelle tonight.  It was a rough 2 hours before bedtime.  She got to go horseback riding during the day, and was super worn out by bedtime.  She said some pretty mean things to her Mommy…just regular mean things kids say when they’re tired-no big deal.  The situation escalated when I redirected her and wanted her to apologize for her behavior.

Lets just say it was not a good situation.  After losing her story time, and her music player, she finally broke down sobbing, which she always does after she’s done something she knows is wrong.  She said, “I am a terrible kid.  I am mean and bad and naughty.”  I told her that was not true, and she should never say something like that. She kept repeating it, and I said to her, “Belle, Jesus forgives our sins.  He forgets them.  When we come to him and tell us the things we’ve done that we know have hurt his heart, he forgives us, and “as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our sins from us. (psalm 103:12)”  DING!  Light flashed across her face.

Earlier in the week, she had excitedly come home from the planetarium telling us about how she learned about North, South, East, and West.  She understood that God carried her sin all the way across the sky far, far from her.  “And he throws it into a yucky cloud” she said.

She wanted to talk to Jesus on her own.  I tried to remember what she said word for word because it was so sweet:,

God, I know that you love me.  Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins.  I am so glad you did that.  It just helps me to know that you did.  (she is sobbing as she is saying this to Jesus).  I love you Jesus, and I always will.  I am glad you died on the cross for my sins, and I hope I can die for you someday too.  I know you are always with me, and your angels are here watching me in my room.  Thank you for sending your angels, because I will never be afraid in my room again.

Tear…

Everything she said in her prayer is a product of hundreds of conversations Rob and I have had with her, along with her church teachers, grandma’s grandpas, etc.  For whatever reason, all the pieces of the puzzle snapped together in her mind tonight.

Thank you Jesus for your precious children, and how you reach our kids with your love in a language they understand.

It is so beautiful how a Jesus sister and her family in Indiana, whom i’ve never met, can touch a Jesus sister in Illinois…with such heart-felt emotion. Thank you for your Isabelle story..
