I Answered

You all asked some great questions last week!  Here are my answers.

What makes you happy?

What makes me happiest is when my whole family is together doing something outside in nature.  It’s how I reconnect with God, and I love experiencing it all with my favorite people.  Watching their eyes get wide as saucers when they see the ocean for the first time, or holding their hands as they climb a mountain they never thought they could makes me the happiest.

How do you guys do Christmas with the girls?

Since we have to travel to Chicago to see both sides of our families, we usually celebrate Christmas on the 23rd or 24th.  They each get one gift from “Santa”, one from each sister, and then a few from us.

What are some of the traditions you have?

One of our favorite Christmas traditions is making Chicago-style deep dish pizza.  It takes a few hours, but totally worth the time and effort.Christmas Day 062

What is something you are working on personally (bad habit, good habit, etc.)?

A terrible habit I am trying to break is eating Oreos or ice cream before bed.  It’s the only time I can sneak in a dessert without having to share, but it’s also really, really bad for me!

How do you &Rob keep your family financially disciplined?

Rob and I have always been very frugal with our finances.  We never make a habit of having a balance on our credit card–we pay them off monthly.  We don’t have any debt outside of our house mortgage.  Pretty much, we just don’t spend what we don’t have.

Do you work on bills/finances together?

Rob and I both use Home Budget on our iPhones so we can both update what we spend through the day. Apart from that, he makes the money and I pay the bills.

How did you meet Rob?

My family started attending Lorimer Baptist Church when I was 12.  Rob became good friends with my older brothers and would always come over to our house.  The first time I saw him, he was wearing a yellow t-shirt and had spikey blonde hair.  He had a nice smile, and I thought he was totally hot.  We were really good friends for four years, and when I was 16, he finally asked me to be his girlfriend.

How did you get engaged?

It was around Christmas time when I was 1.8  We had been saving pennies for a few years to buy an engagement ring.  I expected Rob to ask me another year or so.  We drove around to look at Christmas lights, then he took me to the church we attended at the time.  There were candles lit, and gave me the empty penny jar as a gift.  I knew right away what was going to happen next, but was totally surprised because I expected a camera for Christmas.   We were engaged for a year, then got married March 13, 1993.

🙂 It’s amazing how much money you can save just by collecting pennies.
