Finding Quiet

 Lake Vandergriend 020

Yesterday our family headed to a secret spot.  Our friend has some property next to a lake–he’s nice and he lets us go there sometimes.  It was so good to get away from noise and hear the wind in the trees.  Whitney said the wind was so loud it sounded like the ocean.  We could hear the water splashing against the pier and our paddles dipping into the lake as we swooshed through its smoothness.

For me, nothing compares to getting into nature, being surrounded by the fullness of it all.  God restores my soul when I can do things like hear the wind blowing so loud it sounds like the ocean.

Sometimes I don’t realize how much I need it until I’m there.

Do you have a place to go and be quiet?  Do you have a place where you can hear the water, the wind, or your thoughts?

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,

he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
       for his name’s sake.

psalm 23:1-3

I think it is very hard to be quiet when my life is so loud. It’s hard to sit still…and stop to listen.

we live on a lake with an island in front of my house. I find peace sitting on the pier or the boat. Or just sitting at the picnic table. I feed the birds, listen to their chatter. Take in God’s beauty. I don’t think most people stop and see God in their surroundings.
