Shadow Living

My tendency my entire life has been to push my way to the front, elbowing my way all the way to get my way. I am only just now learning that sitting on the sidelines and in the shadows is actually the most rewarding place to be. When someone I love accomplishes something and I can stand back and watch them glow, I find real joy; But, I fight this every day.

I want to be awesome. I want to be in the front of the line. I want to sweet-talk my way to the top. I want to get ahead. Every day I need God's help to remind me that "shadow living" is actually pretty cool. It is amazing to watch those I care about and love succeed. I want to live my life seeing that happen again and again.

Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand. ~Philippians 2:3-4

I love this thought and the name “Shadow Living.” I now have a name for what I need to work on in my own life. It goes against everything that usually takes place in the business world though, but I know that God’s blessing on my life will be far greater than any job promotion I could try and get on my own. Thank you for the reminder and challenge.

Thanks for the confession Michelle, you speak for many I know. I am reading Ortberg’s “It All Goes Back In The Box” and it reminds me daily of how joyful life can be when you focus on what is really important. I think what is important and makes you get ahead is when you move aside and develop others. Love this post!! You are an amazing mom, wife, friend, lady, and of course doggy owner.
