While I Travel…

Laptop Messenger Bag I mentioned yesterday that I am in Mexico right now. Travelling through airports is fun and exciting. Travelling through airports in India is always an adventure.  Add three children to the mix, and there is bound to be a story to tell at the end of the day.  One of my least favorite memories is an airport security person x-raying Belle’s backpack full of toys and trinkets, pulling it aside, and dumping about 300 Polly Pocket shoes, purses, arms, legs, and sparkly dresses out in front of me, and giving me about 20 seconds to re-pack it all in her bag.  Not a very nice thing to do.

On this last trip, an airport security person decided she was going to check inside of all our carry on bags.  When travelling internationally, one quickly learns that there is no possible way to have a laptop messenger bag, back pack, toiletry bag, bag for clothes, etc.  Everything gets crammed into one bag and that’s the way it is.  Well, this wonderful security agent told us repeatedly, “This is not a laptop bag!  You can not carry your computer in a back pack.  I will not let you through with this bag.””

We just stared at her, wondering what in the world she wanted us to do.  She was apparently very passionate about it, and declared that it was against airline regulations to allow passengers on a plane without a proper laptop bag.

It was crazy. I think Gene played some sort of mind trick on her, because after about 15 minutes of discussion, she allowed us to pass through security with our horribly packed laptops.

Travelling is an adventure!  Always a story to tell, that’s for sure.

Ya know – it’s funny…I always said my favorite place to travel to was Russia. Now, I don’t know! I can’t remember the last time we went on a vacation or get-away to just relax – we even got married as part of a working vacation! I am going to assume my favorite place to travel to will be the first place we are able to go as a family on vacation!

  2. I haven’t traveled much except in college on a singing team. But, does it count that I have ALWAYS wanted to England and Ireland? ALWAYS! I sip tea and make scones and pretend. 🙂

I haven’t traveled out of the country…but I don’t feel deprived. 🙂 I LOVE going on weekend getaways and discovering all the state I’m living in at the time (we move a lot!) has to offer. There is a lot of pleasure in simple weekend trips! Laid-back, fairly local getaways are somewhat inexpensive, less stressful…and you’re close to home.
Last Spring, we drove from the eastern US to California, then back to Arizona where we lived for six months…then on to Texas. The drive across country was quite the adventure, and we saw some beautiful things on our travels!

Anywhere warm, peaceful, quiet, not a lot of people, just me and Justin. The exact location doesn’t really matter, but for sure not a big city.

Mine is more of a concept. I would enjoy to stay in a cabin with my family for a week where we just are. We can hike, nap, read and who cares about electricity. Being in Michigan is an added plus.

I have been fortunate to have traveled to a lot of places, and there are many I would love to visit again. My answer would be any place I haven’t been before. New places are always become “new favorite place!”

I have been blessed to be able to travel to many places but I am not able to call any one of them my “favorite” place…as each place had it own charms. I guess it would be best to say that the trips that I took with my wife and daughter to the beaches in North Carolina are a special “favorite” memory of mine. Doesn’t any trip with those you love really qualify as a “favorite”?

Each trip we take we go on a new adventure. Whether I have enjoyed a vacation with just my husband or my whole family, each trip has had its own special memories we will forever cherish. I look forward to many more adventures and memories with my family!

  9. Ryan says:

I was thinking Jackman Maine or Shimla India but now like Nancy said a quiet place with family is really all that is needed.

I love to travel but sadly haven’t done it near as much as I would have liked. I just love to go anywhere that allows me to be outside in nature – wondering at the amazingness of God’s power and creativity, leaving me in complete awe of his creations. The Grand Canyon most definitely left me speechless and wondering how anyone could look at such grandeur and beauty and not believe in a creator.

OooOOoOo! OOOO! Here’s a story for you. On our way back to the States from India, I had packed my carry-on with gear. I had lenses, microphones, hard drives…all very expensive. And most of it not mine. Needless to say, I was over the weight limit, even after distributing some of my gear among my team. The lady checking us in was very strict and was weighing everyone’s bags. I decided to chat her up and make her my friend, distracting her from the obviously enormous bag on my back. After about 10 minutes of laughing and friendship and rainbows, she let me through without a second look at my bag. On our way through security, I heard my name among a list of others on the overhead. My team and I approached where we had been paged, and I noticed it was the same girl. She was upgrading about 8 of our team to first class! Why? Well, I’m going to guess it was so that she could pull me aside afterwards and ask me how to get a job in the States. So, my bag was safe and we were flying in style!

I have traveled many places within the US. I love to travel. I have only traveled outside the US once and that was when my son was in the Navy in San Diego and we went to Tijuana. That was an eye opener. My most favorite place to travel is going to see my daughter in Portland, OR. I only get to see her once a year so it is always a highlight of my year. My dream tho is to travel to England to see a very very dear friend. She came to see me last year and stayed with me 2 weeks.

My favorite vacation is either a road trip or camping. Road trip with my husband, camping with the kids. We took the kids to Ludington State Park in Michigan last year and we had a blast. Relaxing, hiking, grilling, fishing.

Michelle can’t decide between Anna Maria Island or Cape Cod Massachusetts both places with the ocean and great family memories!

I love to go to a place I haven’t been before. It can be exotic or the next town over. I just like to see new things.

I loved New Zealand. I would go back in a heartbeat.

There is no favorite, yet, because there are places i still want to discover. I do, however, have some memorable travel experiences.

I grew up in the military culture. And, it is a culture. I was born and lived abroad in Germany for most of my childhood. During that time, my parents became close friends with one of my daycare supervisors. She also happened to own a farm in the Black Forest. 🙂

Weekends spent camping out on the old wooden floors of this farmhouse were a treasure. During the day, we hiked the Black Forest, played a game called The Fox and the Hound (can you guess which gender played what?!) and set “traps” for the deer. After dinner, we settled in for the evening with a mean game of Monopoly. By bedtime, we were tucked into our sleeping bags and watching the fire crackle in an old iron stove.

This is one of many fond memories of Germany. I hope to explore and make more with the rest of my life.

Thanks for writing, Michelle. I always enjoy your blog.

  18. Hello, I wish to travel one day. I have never been anywhere. I have only been on an airplane 3 times. I hope this counts as a comment on travel. I wish to one day do a missions trip. I envy how blessed you are by God to be doing this.
