I Can’t Fight This Feeling Anymore

Rob and Michelle

A good friend of mine was sorting through her old photos a few weeks ago and came across these of me and Rob when we are dating. Pretty funny, huh? They forced me to think back to the beginning of “us”.

The first time I saw Rob I was 12 and he was 15. He was friends with my 2 older brothers, so he would frequently stop by and hang out with our family. The thing I remember most about those years are that Rob made me laugh harder than anyone I ever knew. We had a lot of fun together. I thought his blonde, spikey hair was cute, and I thought he was cute.

I remember my dad saying something that struck me when he said it. He said, “you know, I really feel like Rob is a part of our family.” I thought that was odd, but I felt it was true too. Rob went to college when I was a freshman in high school. He says that every girl he dated in college he compared to me…iMichelle 001sn’t that sweet?

I dated boys here and there, but when Rob came home for the summer after my sophomore year in high school, I knew I was in love for real. We had a group of friends that we hung out with, and Rob was one of the only drivers. When we would go out with our friends, he would carefully plan out his route so I would be the last one he would drop off. I remember thinking that was funny, and I was sure he liked me too, but I wasn’t sure.

The drop off thing happened all summer, and finally I got up the courage to write him a NOTE! The note said something brilliant like, DO YOU LIKE ME? YES OR NO. CHECK THE BOX.

Rob called me that night and asked if he could come over and talk to me. We went for a walk to the park, and there he asked me to be his girlfriend. I said yes, and giggled the whole way home. I had never been more happy. I remember getting home and telling my parents and THEY were happy. I don’t think they had ever been happy about my boyfriends before, and this just felt right.

That was the summer of 1989, when REO Speedwagon’s song I can’t Fight This Feeling Anymore was very popular. It was our song, and still is.  And that's how it all began.

What is your love story? I’d LOVE to hear it! Seriously!

We met the first week of college and he told his parents he was going to marry me. I did my best to avoid him and we became friends (hanging out with mutual friends for our freshman year). We did not see each other much Soph. year but ran into each other in February of that year. He came with me to watch jr high students at the mall for a class project and we began dating the next week during “singleness Week” at Taylor. (I don’t think they call it that now.) He came home with me for the Wegner wedding two weeks later and survived meeting the fam. I knew from then on that he was the guy for me. Our song is “What a Wonderful World.” (Sorry for the unromantic sounding recap.)

I enjoyed reading your story, here is ours.
Our romantic story begins with a blind date. My best friend and Bob’s best friend set us up. Unsure of how it would work out we were both nervous. Our first date consisted of a “romantic” dinner at McDonalds and then a “friendly” game of racquet ball. By the way, I won. He says he let me win. That was on a Friday night and we saw each other again on Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday, he kissed me on my cheek. Two weeks later he told me he loved me, I politely said, thank you. I wasn’t in love yet. Two months later my family moved to Toledo, OH. We broke up. We decided our relationship wouldn’t last long distance since we were only 16. About two weeks in, we gave in. I knew then, I loved him too. We decided to give it a chance. We drove back and forth for a little over two years. It reached the point where we either needed to end our relationship or commit to each other for our lifetime. In July we will have been married 21 years. Sometimes the craziest things do work out.
