Trapped and neglected: the heart-wrenching story of Harry and Houdini

The dark reality of animals as gifts and the magical escape to freedom

Today’s story is a heart-wrenching account of the plight of Harry and Houdini, two innocent ducklings who were given as Valentine’s Day gifts to a woman who had no idea how to care for them.

Trapped in a filthy plastic crate in the couple’s living room, the ducklings were left neglected without ever seeing the open sky or swimming in a pond.

Fortunately, their story takes a magical turn as they are rescued by PETA and given a new lease on life at a vegetarian farm.

But their story is a sobering reminder of the dark reality of animals as gifts and the importance of ensuring that every animal has a forever home.

Harry and Houdini were given as Valentine’s Day gifts to a woman who had no idea how to care for them. The ducklings sat in a plastic crate in the couple’s living room for two weeks without ever seeing the open sky or swimming in a pond.

When the woman called PETA to take them, the rescue team found the crate covered in their own waste.

PETA took the ducklings to the Virginia Beach SPCA, where they were cleaned up and given the space they needed to thrive. Katie, a PETA member, offered them a permanent home at her vegetarian farm, where they could live freely with other animals.

However, as the ducklings hadn’t grown up with their mother, they didn’t know how to be ducks. To help build their confidence, Katie introduced them to other animals on the farm.

Finally, Harry and Houdini got to swim in a pond for the first time in their lives, and now they have full, happy lives at the farm.

But not all animals given as gifts are as fortunate. Many are left neglected and in filthy conditions, as caring for them requires a lifetime commitment. Katie urges people not to buy animals as gifts for others and to ensure that every animal has a forever home.
